Ruby K Adams VanHoose, 76, of Somerset passed away Friday, April 28, 2017. She was born on October 12, 1940 in Oil Springs, KY to Ortie and Dora Adams. She is survived by her husband Harold D. VanHoose, married August 12, 1962; her daughter Kara Paige (Stephen) Butcher; two grandchildren, Kessa Hallie-Faye and Kase Douglas: and many precious family and friends.

Ruby’s parents, her in-laws Hollie and Roberta VanHoose, her brother Danny and two sisters Faye and Mildred preceded her in death.

Ruby was a long- time resident of Johnson Co., KY. She also lived 6 years in Elizabethtown, KY and 16 years Tampa, FL. She was a member of the Paintsville United Methodist Church.

Ruby graduated with a Master’s Degree from Morehead State University.

Ruby was a 5th grade and remedial reading teacher with the Johnson Co. Board of Education until her retirement. She enjoyed teaching and her students. Her favorite saying was “If you can read this, thank a teacher.”

Ruby had a great love for geography and made certain that all her students learned how to read maps. She was a world traveler with Switzerland and Hawaii topping her list of most beautiful places she visited. She had beautiful handwriting and enjoyed sending greeting cards to those she loved. She took great pride in teaching her students neat, cursive handwriting.  She was an avid reader. You most often found her with a book or newspaper in her hand.

Ruby had a wonderful smile that could light up a room. A matter of fact way of telling her stories or opinions. If you were her friend, you could bet it was for life. She was loyal to her circle.

In keeping with another of Ruby’s sayings, “Enjoy each day to the fullest and don’t bring me flowers when I’m gone”; memorial contributions can be made to the organization of choice.  Ruby supported several organizations for many years. The Moffitt Cancer Research Center in Tampa, FL; The American Heart Association; The Starkey Hearing Foundation; and Morehead State University.
