She was born in Whitley City, KY, July 19, 1924, daughter of the late Lucy Winchester Anderson and Marion Anderson. She was a retired Bookkeeper and member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph Souleyrette, whom she married April 19, 1947 in Stearns, KY,

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Services 7 p. m., Tuesday, May 1, 2001, at Memory Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, with Bro. CE Jacob & Bro. Larry O"Bryan officiating. Clyne Spradlin

Clyne Spradlin, 58, of 20 Stogsdill Road in Somerset, passed away, April 26, 2001 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

He was born in Pine Mountain, KY, July 6, 1942, son of the late Columbus Spradlin and Della (Lewis) Spradlin. He was a retired Steel Worker, and Veteran of the US Army serving in the Vietnam War.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda (Howard) Spradlin whom he married March 14, 1961, three sons, Gregory (Wanda) Spradlin of Peru, IN, Burt (Amy) Spradlin of Indianapolis, IN, Alan (Donna) Spradlin of Gary IN, a brother, Franklin Spradlin of Maryville, TN and eleven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Clyde Spradlin, two sisters, Wanda Cornett and Eula Stewart.

Graveside services are 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 28, 2001 at Resthaven Cemetery, Harlan ,KY, with Rev. Gary Simpson officiating. Burial in the Resthaven Cemetery, Harlan, KY. Thelma Phelps, 88, of N. Hwy. 1247 in Somerset, passed away April 26, 2001 at 4427 N. Hwy. 1247 in Somerset.

She was born in the Dykes Community, July 19, 1912, daughter of the late John S. Roark and Martha Ann (Bold) Roark. She was a Homemaker and member of Wesley's Chapel Church of God.

Survivors include her son Benny Ray Phelps, five daughters, Wilma Lee (Raymond) Colyer, Ruthella Phelps, Lois Dean (Melvin) Meece, Helen Joyce (Duel) Meece, Juanita Sue (Don) Muse all of Somerset, nine grandchildren, Tammy, Raymond Jr. & Stanley Colyer, Shannon Bosten, Gena Meece, Kim & Troy Meece, David Ray Phelps & Donita Cantrell, seven great-grandchildren, very special friends, Doris & Ned Herald and a host of nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Bennie Phelps, whom she married April 27, 1931, a daughter, Anna Belle Phelps, two granddaughters, Patricia Lynn Colyer & Mamie Hicks, five sisters, Mary Jane Downs, Isabelle Garvey, Ruth Woodall, Vea Burton, Christine Richmond, three brothers, Thomas, Ed and Walter Roark.

Melvin C. New, 74, of Tank Pond Spur Road in Eubank passed away April 25, 2001 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born in the Zion Community, Wayne Co., KY, October 22, 1926, son of the late Mattie Florence New and John Lewis New. He was  retired from Vaught Brothers Manufacturing Co., where he worked over 40 years, Veteran of US Army and was a Christian attending Denham Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Davie New, whom he married Oct. 8, 1948 in Jamestown, KY, son, Terry New of Science Hill, three daughters, Doris (Doyle) Hall of Somerset, Shirley (Lannie) Cook, Donna (Ron) Sumpter both of Eubank, three sisters, Bessie Keith of the Kidder Community in Wayne, Co., Evelyn Keith of Wayne  Co., Juda Carrigan of Pulaski Community, four grandchildren, Daniel and Daisha Hall, Lakeia Cook and Kasandra Sumpter.

He was preceded in death by parents, daughter-in-law, Donna Taylor New, two granddaughters, Casey Lynn New and Terra Dawn New, daughter, Regina New Blevins, three sisters, Jane New, Ovie New, Bertha New, five brothers, Robert, Coy, Elie, Jophes and Leo New.

She was born in Lee County Virginia, February 10, 1898, daughter of the late John Marcum and Delila (Robbins) Marcum. She was a Homemaker and member of New Hope First Church of God, Somerset, KY.

Survivors include three sons, Bob (Hazel) Stevens of Somerset, Carl (Mabel) Stevens of Bronston, Ray (Vivian) Stevens of Bellbrook, OH, two daughters, Kathleen (Carter) Poynter, Joyce (Lee) Broyles both of Somerset, daughter-in-law, Artie (widow of Russell) Stevens, several nieces & nephews, ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bro. Elmer Stevens, whom she married May 27, 1915, daughter, Maxine Stevens, four brothers, three sisters and two grandchildren.

She was born in Somerset, January 13, 1994, daughter of Joey Stoops and Tina (Bereczky) Stoops both of Somerset. She was a  Student at Hopkins Elementary School in Somerset and a member of Victory Christian Fellowship Church in Somerset.

Survivors include her parents, two brothers, Cody Stoops, Josh Maynard, Maternal Grandparents, Blaine (Jerry) Kelly and Paternal Grandfather, George Stoops all of Somerset.

She was preceded in death by her Paternal Grandmother, Faye Stoops.

He was born in Pulaski Co., March 1, 1935, son of Bishop Marvin Cox and Lena (Lefler) Cox. He was a member of West Science Hill Baptist Church in Science Hill.

Survivors include his mother, a sister, Dixie Bourne, nephew, William Scott Bourne, niece, Julie Annette Bourne and grand-niece, Alyana Bourne all of Somerset.

He was preceded in death by his father.

He was born in Pulaski Co., August 1, 1925, son of the late Robert A. Blevins and Maudie (Estes) Blevins. He was a Machine Maintenance at Vaught Bros., Pvt. US Army during WW II and a member of Newel First Baptist Church of God.

Survivors include his wife, Edna (Cash) Blevins, whom he married March 13, 1947, a son Garry Ray (Evelyn) Blevins of Eubank, two daughters, Linda Blevins (Gary) Ruckel of Eubank, Barbara Blevins of Somerset, a sister, Lema Blevins Hoseclaw of Eubank, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Blevins and a brother Lloyd Blevins.

She was born in Pall Mall, TN, September 13, 1900, daughter of the late Sarah Ann Crabtree Brooks and Willie Brooks. She was a homemaker and the oldest member of Denham Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son Melvin (Betty) Crouch of Somerset, four daughters, Willie Hovis of Ash Flat, AK, Pearl Turner of Granite City, ILL, Evelene Davis of Bethalto, ILL, Delta Sadler of Somerset, two sisters, Isabell Jinnings of Jamestown, TN, Delen Clark of Cinn., OH, twenty-two grandchildren, fifty-seven great-grandchildren and thirty great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Cosby Crouch, whom she married Dec. 12, 1915 in Wolf River, TN, parents, two sons, Charlie & Billy Crouch, a brother, Allen Brooks, five sisters, Allie Lewfew, Maude Sowders, Lola Piles, Ida Delk, Delpha Lewfew and five grandchildren.

He was born in Poplarville, KY, May, 29, 1915, son of the late Steve Poynter and Sarah Margaret (Farmer) Poynter. He was a retired Night Watchman, Cumberland Wood & Chair, Pvt., US Army during WW II and member of Poplarville Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include his wife Christine (Nolen) Poynter, two sons Raymond Wayne (Joyce) Poynter, John Stephen Poynter both of Somerset, five daughters, Geraldine (William) Simpson of Somerset, Precilla Jane (Cecil) Stogsdill of Eubank, Betty Lorene (Gary) Walker of Roachdale, IN, Sarah Druscilla (Robert) Lark of Danville, KY, Carolyn (Gregory) Farmer of Corbin, fifteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, Perry Lee, Henry Everett, Kurry, Harmon, Lewis, Charlie Poynter, eight sisters, Amanda Farmer, Mary Belle Rogers, Sarah Ann Meece, Bessie Farmer, Cardestal "Carr" Farmer, Elsie Poynter, Jeanette Donlouie and Martha Hines.

She was born in Pulaski, Co., March 29, 1950, daughter of Leslie Hargis and Anna Mar (Greer) Hargis. She was a cashier at Wal-Mart Pharmacy in Somerset and a member of Woodstock Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Rose, whom she married Dec. 24, 1970, her mother, a daughter, Alisa Rose of Waynesburg, three brothers, Rothel Hargis of Science Hill, George Wayne Hargis and Darrell Hargis both of Waynesburg.

She was preceded in death by her father and two sisters, Wanda Kay Hargis and Katie Sue Hargis.

He was born in Pulaski Co., August 4, 1914, son of George M. Osborne and Lula (Larkin) Osborne. He was a retired farmer, Deacon for 53 years at Good Hope Baptist Church, Director in Farm Bureau for several years, a member of Good Hope Baptist Church and he died on "Good Friday".

Survivors include his wife, Ruby (Epperson) Osborne, whom he married on Sept. 21, 193, three sons, Gerald (Linda) Osborne of Greenville, NC, Forest (Teresa) Osborne of Rolling Prarie, IN, Gary Osborne of Lexington, KY, two daughters, Joyce (Bob) Halsey of Harrodsburg, KY, Jeanette (Lonnie) Wilson of Elizabethtown, KY, a sister, Gloria (Ben) Wesley, a brother, Willard (Lucy) Osborne both of Somerset, twelve grandchildren, Fields Halsey, Whitney Vitatoe, Anthony Osborne, Lynn Nealy, Angie Hand, Kim Osborne, Timothy Osborn, David Osborne, Stuart Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Dana Winchester and  Chris Osborne, several step-grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was born in Goochtown, KY, February 10, 1933, daughter of the late Richard Whitter and Bertha (Adams) Whitter. She was co-owner of C & J Auto Parts, Waynesburg, retired owner of Warren Auto Sales and a member of Eubank Church of Christ, Eubank, KY.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Warren, three sons, Larry (Vickie) Warren of Somerset, Robert (Fanny) Warren, Carl (Teresa) Warren both of Eubank, KY, a sister Barbara (Harold) Carter also of Eubank, cousin Pam Goe of Muncie, IN, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by daughter, Brenda Ann Warren and a brother, Carlos Whitter.

He was born in Dykes, KY, November 23, 1919, son of the late James Bolton and Bertha (Farmer) Bolton. He was retired, veteran of the US Army, WWII and a member of Whetstone Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include his wife, Althean (Stogsdill) Bolton, whom he married Oct. 5, 1977, step-son, Jackie (Paulette) Stogsdill of Somerset, two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Earl Bolton, two sisters, Eva Lee Bolton and Delma Edwards.

Ernal Merrick, 96, of Mt. Zion, passed away April 5, 2001 at Somerset Nursing & Rehab Facility, Somerset.

He was born in Naomi, KY, July, 3, 1904, son of the late Luther Merrick and Polly Ann (Dagley) Merrick.  He was a Farmer.

Survivors include two daughters, Ruby (Thomas) Shadoan of Science Hill, Rose (Dale) Stogsdill of Lexington, six sons, Lendon (Lucy) Merrick, Ervel (Virgie) Merrick, Troy (Elaine) Merrick all of Science Hill, Dale (Enza) Merrick, Vernon (Mary Sue) Merrick both of Somerset, Wilbern (Mary Evelyn) Merrick of Nicholasville, a sister, Pearl (Raymond) Prather of Rensselaer, IN, daughter-in-law, Linda Merrick of Nicholasville, fifteen grandchildren, twenty-two Great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie (Scrimager) Merrick, whom he married Dec. 25, 1930, five brothers, M. E., Orville, Claude, Hulen and Erlin "Bossy" Merrick, two sisters, Verie Merrick Smith, Eria Merrick Hudson and great-granddaughter, Jennifer Rogers.

Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2001 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY, with Bro Charles Woodcock officiating. Burial in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Somerset. Farris Bailey Danyelle Decker, 2, of Hwy. 1003, Somerset, passed away April 6, 2001 at her home.

She was born in Somerset, June, 26, 1998, daughter of Cynthia Dick and David Decker.

Survivors include her parents, Great-Grandmother Melva Jean Dick of Somerset, Great-Grandmother, Eva Mae Presley of Marysville, IN, Great-Grandparents, Cleda and Dermus Dalton of Somerset, Grandparents, Cleda Dick of Somerset, Clyde Dick of Monticello, Grandmother, Ella Mae Cox Howard of Somerset, five aunts, two uncles, several great-aunts and uncles, five special cousins, Katleen, Adrian, Aslin, Tyler and Leanna.

Raymond "Ray" New

Raymond "Ray" New, 72, of Colver Road, Bronston, KY, passed away April 4, 2001 at his residence.

He was born in Delta (Wayne Co.), KY, September 29, 1928, son of the late Myra Staley New and Harle New. He was a retired carpenter & maintenance man at Woodson Bend Resort and member of Quinton Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Thompson New, whom he married Dec. 24, 1946 in Jamestown, KY, two sons, J. C. (Sue) New of Bronston, Conley (Terri) of Nancy, a brother, Ronnie New of Wayne Co., six sisters, Magalene "Madge" New of Bedford, IN, Duetta Merritt of Somerset, Betty Prather, Cathy Morrow both of Bronston, Polly Hammond of South Amehurst, OH, Mary Snoot of Bedford, IN, three grandchildren, Kristy Blackburn of Lexington, Trey Dick of Nancy and Troy New of Bronston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Ruby Casada and Hazel Branscum.

Maxine D. Cox

Maxine D. Cox, 76, of the Faubush Community, passed away April 3, 2001 at her residence.

She was born in McCreary Co., KY, January 23, 1925, daughter of the late, Martha Roundtree Duncan and Richard Duncan. She was a retired nurse from Rice Patterson Air Force Base Hospital and a member of the Old Fashion Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband, Rev. Joseph C. Cox, whom she married May 10, 1950 in Dayton, Ohio, four daughters, Donna (Clarence) Jones of Somerset, Vicki (William) Barnett of Sadieville, KY, Rose (Alan) Walters, Peggy (Jerry) McClendon both of Nancy, ten grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Joseph Carter Cox Jr., two daughters, Rebecca Claudett Cox, Martha Cox, two brothers, Richard and James Duncan and a sister, Jean Ertell.

Hassee Carter

Hassee Carter, 89, of Hwy. 3276 Waynesburg, KY, passed away April 2, 2001 at Fort Logan Hospital in Stanford, KY. 

He was born in Louisa, KY, October 25, 1911, son of the late Hezekiah Webb Carter and Adaline (Thompson) Carter. He was a farmer, store clerk in Waynesburg and member of the Double Springs Baptist Church.

Survivors include a step-son, Roy (Sue) Russell of Kings Mt., step-daughter, Tammy (Doug) Roberts of Waynesburg , sister, Elizabeth Osborne of Somerset and several nieces and nephews..

He was preceded in death by his wives, Dovie K. (Hines) Carter, Mattie Belle Singleton, Lois Jeanette Fields, step-daughter, Edith Russell Eubank, six brothers, Beckham, Loranza, Moan, Edgar, Richard and Finley Carter, three sisters, Gladys Smith, Lzenia Morgan and Erma Adams.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001 at Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill, with the Rev. Brad King officiating. John Maynard Wood

June 9, 1923 - Apr. 3, 2001

John Maynard Wood, 77, of W. Hwy. 80 in Nancy passed away April 3, 2001 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born in Nancy, KY, June 9, 1923, son of the late Gertrude Maiden Wood and John Oscar Wood. He was a retired inspector for the Dept. of Transportation, farmer, WWII Navy Veteran, member of the Sievers Masonic Lodge #491 in Nancy, Graduate of Nancy High School 1941, Kentucky Colonel, received a Presidential Unit Citation (USS Bunker Hill) during WWII and a member of the White Oak Baptist Church in Nancy.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Vaught Wood, whom he married Jan. 8, 1955 in Rossville, Georgia, two sons, Maynard (Kathy) Wood of Nancy, Todd (Jeannie) Wood of Somerset, a daughter, Sheila (Marshall) Todd of Nancy, a brother, W.W. Todd, two sisters, Gladys Wood, Cedahila Jones all of Nancy, three grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Todd, Matthew Scott Wood and Andrew Jacob Wood.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dwight wood.

Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Thursday, April 5, 2001 at White Oak Baptist Church in Nancy, with the Bro. James Floyd officiating. Burial in the White Oak Cemetery, Military Honors conducted by American Legion Honor Guard Post # 38. Visitation Wednesday, April 4, 2001 after 5:00 p.m. at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home who is in charge of arrangements. He was born in Burnside, KY, March 19, 1939, son of the late Bertie Mar Troxell and Dallas Texas Sullivan. He was a truck driver and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include his former wife, Catherine Haynes, four sons, David (Connie) Sullivan of Ferguson, Richard (Barbara) Sullivan of Newport, KY, Matthew (Teresa) Sullivan of Somerset, Leroy (Marie) Sullivan of Bellevue, KY, three daughters, Tammy Sullivan of Burnside, Elise (Shane) Davis of Ferguson, Daphanie (Albert) Young of Monticello, a sister, Julie Sullivan, Burnside, sixteen grandchildren, Heather Randolph, Carrie and Larry Sullivan, Renee, Blake and Albert Young Jr., Danielle Sullivan, Christina and Richard Sullivan, Dustin, Kayla and Christopher Davis, Brittany and Matthew Sullivan, Jessica and Jennifer Sullivan.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jacob Young, two sisters, Loretta Jean Haynes and Christine Rose Sullivan.
