Charles Browning Bell

    January 5, 1923 - September 13, 2009

Charles Browning Bell, age 86 of Somerset, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born on January 5, 1923 in New Concord, KY, the son of C.N. and Retta Stubblefield Bell.  He is survived by a son, Rev. Jeff (and Dr. Susan) Bell; a grandson, Charles “Chad” Browning Bell II of Paris, KY; a granddaughter, Sarah Bell (and husband, Matt Simpson); a great grandson, Elijah Chad Simpson; and a brother, Donald (and Geary) Bell of Louisville, KY. He was preceded in death by his wife, Vertie Smith Bell.

“Charlie” as he was known, was former owner of Charlie Bell Pontiac-Buick- GMC Trucks and retired from the Somerset Refinery. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He also graduated from Bowling Green Business University.

He was an elder at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Somerset, a member and former president of the Rotary Club and the Chamber of Commerce. He had been co-chair of the American Red Cross Fund Drive, the Rotary International Polio Plus Campaign, and was a former board member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kentucky and Christian Care Communities. He served on the Board of the Bluegrass Council of Boys Scouts of America.

Visitation for Mr. Bell will be Tuesday, September 15th from 5-8 pm at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Somerset, Highway 39.

Funeral service will be Wednesday, September 16th at 11:00 am at First Christian Church of Somerset with Rev. Doug Couch officiating. Burial will be in the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, KY.
