Elza Lee Phelps

    May 25, 1920 - May 12, 2011

Elza Lee Phelps, age 90 of Somerset, departed this life on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born in the Goodwater Community of Pulaski County on May 25, 1920 to the late William Allen and Sarah Ellen Phelps.  He served in the United States Army.  Mr. Phelps was a barber for 62 years and was the owner/operator of Phelps Barber Shop in Somerset, Kentucky. He was a member of the American Legion Post #38.  He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Somerset and attended John Wilson’s Sunday School Class faithfully.  He was also an active member of “Young at Heart” at First Baptist Church. 

Mr. Phelps is survived by a son, William D. “Bill” (and Kim) Phelps of Somerset, KY; three daughters, Sylvia (and Walter) Jones of Emerald Isle, NC, Jenny (and Robert) Epperson of Danville, KY and Mary Deane(and Conway) Speaks of Somerset, KY; seven grandchildren, Megan Phelps, Logan Phelps, Jamie (and Jason) Patrick, Kasey (and Sebrina) Keeney, Kim (and Dana) Sutton, Jason Speaks and Kevin and (Chrystal) Speaks; seven great grandchildren, Colyer Speaks, Connor Speaks, Taylor Speaks, Noah Patrick, Will Keeney, Erin Keeney and Erika Keeney; two brothers, Ora (and Beulah) Phelps of Berea, KY and Prince (and Bertie Lou) Phelps or Brooksville, KY; one sister, Zelma Durham of West Chester, OH and a special friend, Thalia Cox and family.  

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Jenkins Phelps whom he married on July 4, 1942 in Yuma, Arizona; a daughter, Carolyn Sue Phelps; three brothers, Lewis, Dahl and Floyd Phelps; and a sister, Mildred Phelps.

Visitation for Mr. Phelps will be Saturday, May 14, 2011 after 6:00 pm at First Baptist Church, 128 North Main Street, Somerset, KY and after 1:00 pm on Sunday, May 15th, 2011 until time for funeral service at 2:30 pm at the church with Dr. French Harmon officiating.  Burial will be in the Wesley’s Chapel Cemetery.
