William "Shorty" Bates, Jr.

William "Shorty" Bates, Jr.,86, of 2210 Grundy Rd., Somerset, passed away February 25, 2001 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

He was born in Grundy, KY, June 7, 1914, son of the late William Bates and Olga (Packe) Bates. He was a Farmer and member of Barnesburg Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Mae (Sipple) Bates, whom he married July 14, 1963, four brothers, Robert (Ina) Bates of Somerset, Johnie (Fredia) Bates of Riverview, FL, Harold (Nancy) Bates of Monroe, Oregon, Edward (Brenda) Bates of Louisville, KY, seven sisters, Leta Bobbitt, Roberta (Joe) Cundiff, Effie Callahan, Ola Jasper, Dorothy Gilliam, Marie (Jack) Sowder, Edna Mae (Loyd) Compton all of Somerset, a sister-in-law, Catherine Bates of Somerset and thirty-eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Alton and James "Jeff" Bates.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 28, 2001 at Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY, with Bro. Harold Harris officiating. Burial in the Rocklick Cemetery, Somerset, KY. Friends may call after Tuesday 6:00 p.m. at Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, who is in charge of arrangements.

 

 

Gerry Roy

Gerry Roy, 67, of 1000 Estil-Hackney Rd., in Eubank, passed away February 24, 2001 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.

He was born in Pulaski Co., KY, November 1, 1933, son of the late Elwood Roy and Dolly (Stringer) Wiles. He was a Factory Worker.

Survivors include two sons, Tony Compton of Paragon, IN, Scott Compton of Greenfield, IN, two daughters, Carla Gibson of Burnside, KY, Joye Orr of Ingalls, IN, a brother Jim Roy of Eubank, KY, a sister, Joann Marcum of Corpus Christi, TX, seven grandchildren, Jeremy Eldridge, Angelique Escoe, Ryan Eldridge, Eric Eldridge, Jacob Compton, Toni Compton, Haley Compton, five great-grandchildren, Austin Eldridge, Kelsi Eldridge, Tyler Eldridge, Elijah Bowles and Sidney Nichols.

He was preceded in death by a son, Barry Jim Compton, a daughter, Rebecca Compton and a grandchild, Ashley Julianne Compton.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home in Science Hill. Burial in the Lakeside Memorial Gardens, Somerset, KY. Sibley M. (Parkey) Wells

Feb. 26, 1923 - Feb. 22, 2001

Sibley M. (Parkey) Wells, 77, of Franklin, IN, passed away February 22, 2001 at Todd-Aiken Health Center, Franklin, IN.

She was born in Somerset, KY, February 26, 1923, daughter of the late Alfred Parkey and Maude (Arthur) Parkey. She was a homemaker, member of American Legion #28, Auxiliary & Senior Citizens Center, both of Key West, FL, life member of Veterans of Foreign War #5864 Auxiliary & Women of the Moose, both of Greenwood, IN, 1941 graduate of Shopville High School and member of Clifty Grove Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include a sister, Emma Jean Poindexter of Franklin, IN, two nieces, Joan Snell of Somerset, Kwilda S. Sheppard of Carlsbad, CA, three nephews, Michael A. Poindexter, Tony Parkey both of Franklin, IN, Ronald Parkey of Somerset and Moye, her little dog.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Wells, whom she married Jan. 18, 1946 in Somerset, four brothers, Winfred "P. L." Arthur, Clayton, Lonnie "J. D.", Arville Parkey and a nephew, Marvin "Dock" Arthur.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 26, 2001 at Morris & Hislope Funeral Home, Science Hill, KY, with Robert Southwood officiating. Burial in the Barnesburg Cemetery in Somerset, KY. Delphia Jean (Pennington) Ervin Flynn

Delphia Jean (Pennington) Ervin Flynn, 71, passed away February 19, 2001 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

She was born in Leslie Co. KY, March 3, 1929, daughter of the late John Henry Pennington and Dorothy (Buckhart) Pennington. She was a LPN at Crestview Nursing Home, she earned her LPN Degree at Berea College and was a member of Somerset Church of Christ in Somerset.

Survivors include three daughters, Linda (Billy) Hodge of Somerset, Evelyne "Eve" Layne of Portsmouth, OH, Barbara Ervin of Bellue, Neb., a son Willie Ray (Kathleen) Pennington of Hyden, KY, three sisters, Slyvania Birthfield of Bear Branch, KY, Pearl Adams of Mt. Zion, KY, Edith Smith, a brother Jimmy Pennington both of Hyden, KY, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Emil Ervin, a daughter, a grand daughter and a grandson.
