Mr. Elbert Eugene "Gene" Johnson, 57, Skyview Drive passed away Monday February 25, 2002 at his residence.

He was born May 22, 1944 in Lafollette, TN. a son of the late Johnny Johnson and Lois Johnson of Lafollette, TN. He was a U S Army Veteran, a heating and air repairman and a member of Jordan Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Linda (Dalton) Johnson whom he married on August 29, 1970 in Lafollette, TN., his mother, two sons; Elbert Eugene "Gene" Johnson II of Somerset, KY and James Joseph "J. J." (and Rachel) Johnson Science Hill, KY., one daughter; Tonya Lynn Johnson, Somerset, KY. four brothers; Joe Johnson, Jim Johnson, Roger Johnson and Eddie Ray Johnson, all of Lafollette, TN., two sisters; Faye Murphy, Sevierville, TN. and Barbara Kindred, Lafollette, TN.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Merle Johnson.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Wednesday February 27, 2002 at Jordan Baptist Church with Brother Billy Miller officiating. Burial will be in Burnside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:00 P. John B. Long, 79, Sardis Road passed away Sunday February 24, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born September 6, 1922 in Bullsgap, TN. a son of the late William Hobert Long and Martha E. (Gillette) Long. He was retired from the Chrysler Corporation in Indianapolis, IN. and of the Baptist faith..

John is survived by his wife Alta M. (Taylor) Long whom he married on December 23, 1948 in Somerset, KY., one brother; Roy (and Dorothy) Long, Sun City, FLA. two sisters; Rossie Merricks, Sidney, OH. and Billie (and Chet) Norfleet, Science Hill, KY. and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers; Ralph, Warren and Jay Long and a brother and sister who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 1:00 P. M. Tuesday February 26, 2002 at the Chapel of Morris and Hislope Funeral Home with Brother Scotty Nix officiating. Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Mildred Goggins Davis was born to the late Andrew and Lydia Goggins on February 22, 1921 in Somerset, Ky. She was the step-daughter of the late Emma Clarine Goggins Pennington. She departed this life on February 19, 2002 at the age of 80 at her home in Lexington, KY. She was united in marriage to the late Edgar Davis on April 19, 1945 in Somerset, KY.

Mildred professed her hope in Christ at the age of 21 under the pastorage of the late Rev. William H. Mills, Sr. She was active in her church, serving as treasurer and secretary until she moved to Florida. She returned to Somerset in 1970 and later moved to Lexington, KY. in 1989 where she resided until her death. Mildred was a loving and devoted wife, mother, sister, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her sisters; Helen Goggins, Irene Slaughter, Mary J. Goggins and Ruth Goggins Baker, and brother; Robert Goggins and 1 step-brother; Gerald Pennington.

survivors include her daughters; Jonita Davis and Jana Davis, grandchildren; Lydia Klara Gibson and Stacy Ryan Davis, sister; Anna M. Whittington of Far Rock Away NY, and step-sister; Sarah Coffey of Lexington, KY., 1 brother; John Goggins of Lexington, KY. and 2 Step-brothers; George Pennington of Somerset, KY and Paul Pennignton of Beaver, PA.

She leaves a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church on Saturday February 23, 2002 at 1:00 P. M. with Pastor Siebert Taylor officiating, burial was in the Mt. Olive Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery following the service.

Tilford M. Meece, 82, Randall MN., formerly of Pulaski County passed away Wednesday February 20, 2002 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital Little Falls, MN.

He was born December 16, 1919 a son of the late James M. Meece and Lizzie (Turner) Meece. He was employed by Scientific Atlanta, a member of the Mason and the National Rifle Association. He was interested in woodworking, machinery and gospel music. He was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife; Nora (Sears) Meece whom he married on October 25, 1941, two sons; Bill (and Shirley) Meece, Loveland, OH. and Tommy Meece, Randall, MN., two daughters; Betty and Carol Meece both of Randall, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Verdie Nancy Ellen Godsey Black, 77, Dixon Smith Road passed away Monday February 18, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Verdie was born July 17, 1924 in Delta, Kentucky, a daughter of the late Zachie L. Godsey and Mattie Lou (Flynn) Godsey. She was a homemaker and a member of Pulaski Baptist Church.

She is survived by five sons: Roy Lee (and Christine) Black, Somerset, KY., Howard (and Joyce) Black, Bronston, KY., Carl (and Debbie) Black, Cloverdale, IN., Ronnie (and Barbara) Black, Eubank, KY. and Jerry (and Joyce) Black, Bronston, KY. two daughters; Betty Black, Eubank, KY and Barbara Sue Bishop, Indianapolis, IN., 23 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Haynes Stanley Black whom she married on May 21, 1940 in Delta, KY., two daughters; Verline Kinser and Nellie Ruth Black, one grandson; Ryan Black, one brother; Stanley Godsey, three sisters; Lexie Bolen, Melvie Phelps and Hattie Godsey.

Vella E. (Whitaker) Whitaker, 89, Ano Road passed away Saturday February 16, 2002 at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.

Vella was born October 15, 1912 in Pulaski County, KY. a daughter of the late Wm. Henry Whitaker and Laura Mae (Dugger) Whitaker. She was a homemaker, retired form Ikerd-Bandy Coal Company and a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.

She is survived by 3 sons; Wm. Ellis Whitaker, Somerset, KY., L. V. "Bob Whitaker, Indianapolis, IN. and Hubert Whitaker Jr., Somerset, KY. 2 brothers; Lee Whitaker, Hopkinsville, KY. and Dorwin Whitaker, Greenwood. IN. on sister; Irene Whitis, Indianapolis, IN., 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Hubert Whitaker, whom she married on July 19, 1930 and who passed away July 10, 1940, 2 brothers; Bill and Bonnie Whitaker and 1 grandchild.

Grace A. Martin, the daughter of the Flonnie Boyd Griffis and the Late Delmos Griffis, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on March 1, 1921 and departed this life on Friday February 15, 2002 having attained the age of 80 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. James W. Martin in 1960 in Bostonia, California, he survives. Other survivors include 3 sons; James William(and Lori) Martin Jr. of Atlanta, GA., Jerry Wayne (and Rebecca Ann) Martin of Post Falls, ID. and Kim (and Lori) Martin of San Diego, CA., 3 daughters; Cheryl Hemmings of San Diego, CA., Cindy (and David) Andrade of Sans Gabriel, CA. and Vikki (and Drew) Russo of Elchajohn, CA. , 2 sisters; Macie Wilson of Burnside, KY., and Phyllis (and Carl ) Henry of Somerset, KY., 13 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.

Other than her father, she was preceded in death by 1 brother; Clyde Backley Martin.

Grace was a registered nurse, and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She was a kind person who will be deeply missed by all who knew her, she leaves a host of relatives, friends and church family who mourn her passing.

 

Theodore Lemuel Cain, 83, Ocala Road passed away Friday February 15, 2002 at ST. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Theodore was born March 7, 1918 in Berea, KY., a son of the late Jeffy Lee Cain and Lizzy (Vanhook) Cain. He was a Farmer and a School Bus Driver for the Pulaski County Board Of Education. He was of the Methodist Faith.

He is survived by one 1/2 sister; Tressie Marie Pollitt, Texas, 5 grandchildren; Paulett McClendon, Penny Cain, Paul D. Cain Jr. Perry Cain and Porter Cain and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; Margaret (Clemmer) Cain, one son; Paul Daniel Cain, two brothers; James Marion Cain and Richard Lewis.

Mark Allen Haste, 17, Hidden Farm Road passed away Thursday February 14, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

Mark was born June 25, 1984 in Somerset, KY., a son of Zyndall Haste and Amy Jill (Hurt) Haste. He was a Sever at Jerry’s Restaurant, a student at Pulaski County High School, a member of the Pulaski County High School Marching Band, a former member of the Texas Community Shooting Club and a member of the Science Hill Church of Christ.

He is survived by his parents, one brother; Darin Haste, Somerset, KY. one sister; Allison Haste, Somerset, KY., Paternal Grandparents; Carroll and Betty Haste, Somerset, KY., Maternal Grandparents; Norman and Judy Hurt, Eubank, KY.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother; Kathleen Haste.

Clara East Steltenkamp, 81, Seymour, IN. formerly of the Quinton Community passed away Monday February 11, 2002 in Seymour, IN.

She was a daughter of the late Jeff East and Cora East. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by one daughter; Kathy Miranda, Seymour, IN, several nephews and nieces.

She was precede in death by her parents; two brothers; Essie and Jessie East, 2 sisters; Geneva Casada and Ollie Hardwick.

Nancy Gene Hall, 49, daughter of the late Elza and Mary Ellen Roberts Hall, was born on April 12, 1952 in Somerset, Kentucky and departed this life on Tuesday February 12, 2002 at her residence.

Mr. Wesley "Wes" Molen, son of the late Killes and Henrietta Bland Molen was born on September 25, 1920 at Somerset, KY. and departed this life at his residence on Monday February 11, 2002 having attained the age of 81 years.

He was united in marriage to Mrs. Nellie Turner Molen in February of 1963, she survives. other survivors include 3 sons; Clyde Molen of Somerset, KY., Lewell Molen of Tennessee and Johnny Molen of Colorado, 1 daughter; Mary Lane of Ohio, 1 sister; Maxine Slavey and her husband Rich of Faubush, KY., Some grandchildren , Ertis and Don McGowan and Darlene Lyon whom he raised as his own children.

Wes was a farmer and a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, he was a hard working farmer who loved his wife and family very much. He was also a kind man who will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He leaves a host of relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

Elizabeth G. "Bibbie" Surber, 81, Old Estesburg Rd. passed away Monday February 11, 2002 at her residence.

She was born January 8, 1921 in Indiana, the daughter of the late Leland H. Webb and Myrtle (Ruckle) Webb. She was a homemaker and a member of the Estesburg Church of Christ.

She is survived by one brother; Charles Webb, Franklin, OH., several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; Herbert Ray Surber whom she married on March 1, 1945 and who passed away May 24, 1993.

Juanita (Adams) McKee, 89, N. Hwy 1247 passed away Saturday February 9, 2002 at Lake Cumberland regional Hospital.

She was born April 24, 1912 in Cincinnati, Ohio a daughter of the late William Andrew Adams and Florence (Roysdon) Adams. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by two sons; Glen McKee Science Hill, KY. and Gary McKee Eubank, KY., four daughters; Evelyn Collins Eubank, KY., Eunice McKee Corbin, KY., Montana Shadoan, Cincinnati, OH. and Karen Edwards, Somerset, KY. two sisters; Christine Kuhn, Cincinnati, OH. and Irene Withers, Science Hill, KY., 15 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Pete McKee whom she married on July 9, 1927 and who passed away October 27, 1991, one daughter; Pauline McKee, two brothers; Jacob and garner Adams, two sisters; Geneva Radeke and Dahliah Weisse.

Ethel Scrimager Sumpter, daughter of the late Carl and Lilly Daws Scrimager, was born at Naomi, Kentucky on April 7, 1925 and departed this life at her residence on February 8, 2002 having attained the age of 76 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Richard Sumpter on January 2, 1943 in Pulaski County, he preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 daughter; Sharon (and Jim) Walkusli of Nancy, KY., 2 brothers; Clifford (and Sue) Scrimager of Bement, IL., and Denver (and Phyllis) Scrimager of Monticello, IL., 2 sisters; Ada Sowder (and Edison) Ard of Mt. Vernon, IL., 3 grandchildren; Jim (and Kristi) Walkuski, Tami (and Brian) Ellis and Kip Sumpter and 1 great grandchild; Stephen Keller.

Other than her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by 1 son; Chuck Sumpter, 6 brothers; Hirstle, Herthie, Willie, Willard, Everett, and Ernest Scrimager and 3 sisters; Alma Burton, Ina Sweeney and Laura Bell De Vincent.

Ethel was a homemaker and a member of the Beacon Hill Baptist Church. She was involved with the Beacon Hill Baptist Church Beaconaires, the open door Sunday school class, and the Sympathy Band.

She was a kind person who will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She leaves a host of relatives and friends who mourn her passing.

Madison Davis Sims, N. Hwy 837, infant daughter of Anthony Sims and Tracy (Davis) passed away Friday February 8, 2002 at UK Medical Center in Lexington, KY.

She is survived by her parents, one brother; Blake Sims, Waynesburg, KY.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 A. M. Monday February 11, 2002 at Sardis Cemetery with Brother Vola Brown officiating.

Cecil Hays Francis, 67, Mt. Washington, KY., formerly of Pulaski County, passed away Thursday February 7, 2002 at Jewish Hospital in Louisville, KY.

He was born April 30, 1934 in Beulan, KY., a son of the late Jack Francis and Nancy (Engle) Francis. He was a U. S. Navy and U. S. Marine Veteran, an Electrician at General Electric Appliance Co. in Louisville, KY., a member of the Local 761 and of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by four daughters; Kim Jordan, Monica Francis and Tina Francis, all of Mt. Washington, KY. and Vickie Francis Eubank, KY., one son; Samuel Francis, Mt. Washing ton, KY., one brother; Cortez Francis, St. Petersburg, FL. three sisters; Peg Matteson, St. Petersburg, FL., Florence Carter and Grace Estes both of Eubank, KY. and four grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Chessie (Burgess) Faw, 96, of Jake Faw Road, Waynesburg, Ky. passed away Thursday February 7, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born April 21, 1905 the daughter of the late Wiley and Matilda (Absher) Burgess. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Hays Fork Baptist Church of Berea. Previously She was a sixty year member of Olive Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons; Wiley B. (and Geneva) Faw, Sr., Waynesburg

and D. Clifford (and Doris) Faw, Connersville, IN., one daughter; Ethel Mae (and Dewey) Mullins of Berea, one brother; Edward Burgess, Mt. City, TN., one sister; Evazella Parsons, W. Jefferson, NC.; Nine grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband; Jacob R. Faw, one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday February 10, 2002 at the Olive Baptist Church Waynesburg with Brother Vincent Carmen and Brother C. E. Jacobs officiating. Mr. Randy Gaddis, son of the late William Aden and Doris Lucille Spears Gaddis, was born at Franklin, Indiana on August 30, 1950 and departed this life on Tuesday February 5, 2002 in Somerset, KY. having attained the age of 51 years.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Nelson on October 7, 1972 at Singletown, she survives. Other survivors include 2 daughters; Crystal (and Thomas) Tygart of Somerset, KY. and Linda Michelle Gaddis who also resides in Kentucky, 2 brothers; David and Charles Gaddis of Indiana, 4 sisters; Janice Faye Elmore of Lebanon, Indiana, Fredia Ann Rice of Lexington, KY., Sharlene Childress who also resides in Kentucky and Elizabeth Gaddis Smith of Indiana, and 5 grandchildren; Monica Page Reynolds, Matthew And McKenzie Tygart, and Amanda and Karen Hall.

Randy was a member of the Somerset Lodge #111 F & AM, the Oleika Shrine Temple, the Hill Billy Clan #31, he was the former master of Somerset Lodge #111, he was 32nd degree Scottish Rite, and a member of the Eastern Star #23, and an associate member of Jericho Temple in Kingsport, Tennessee. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a Vietnam Veteran having served in the U. S. Army for 13 months.

Randy adhered to the Church of God Faith, and he owned and operated Red’s Repair for several years. He had many hobbies, but his most enjoyable was spending time with his granddaughter Page.

There will be Masonic Services for Mr. Randy Gaddis at 7:00 P.M. Thursday night at the chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home, and Military Honors conducted Friday by the American Legion Post #38.

Mr. Alfred L. Stephens, 67, 110 Jacksboro Street passed away Tuesday February 5, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born December 31, 1934 in Kidder Community, a son of the late Arthur Estes Stephens and Maudie Jane (Cowan) Stephens. He was a veteran of the US Marines attaining the Rank of Sgt. in the Korean War and SN E-3 in the US Navy, a plumber, a member of the American Legion Past #38, D.A.V. and V.F.W. He was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife; Celestine Tina (Ronco) Stephens, whom he married on January 2, 1960 in Brookline, Massachusetts, one son; Peter (and Nancy) Stephens, Columbia, S. C., one daughter; Cathy (and Fred) Haynes, Somerset, KY., three brothers; Leonard H. Stephens and Larry K. Stephens, both of Elyria, OH. and Paul Edward Stephens, Somerset, KY., two sisters; Geneva Lee, New Castle, IN. and Betty Jean Fly, Cleveland, OH. one grandson; Jared Travis Haynes, one granddaughter; Angela Marie Haynes. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers; Homer, Robert and Fred Stephens.

Camden Slagle, infant son of David and Shiela Hines was born and died on February 2, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital. Other than his parents, he is survived by 3 brothers; Jacob, Lucas, and Breyton Slagle, 3 sisters; Cierra, Kayla and Chloe Slagle all of Somerset, his paternal grand parents; David and Ackie Slagle of Somerset and his maternal grand parents; Robert Hines and Evelyn McIntosh of Muncie, IN.

 

Graveside services were held on Tuesday, February 5, 2002 at the Somerset Cemetery where burial followed.

Blanche (Halsey) Cook , 78, of E. Hwy 452 Eubank, Ky. passed away Friday, February 1, 2002 at 2875 E. Hwy 452 Eubank.

She was born in Pulaski County on September 28, 1923 to the late Jackson and Rachel Isabell (Anderson) Halsey. She was a homemaker and a member of Eubank Baptist Church.

She is survived by a daughter; Pamela (and Adrian) Surber of Eubank, KY., two sons; Larry Ross (and Karen) Cook and Lanny (and Shirley) Cook both of Eubank, KY., five brothers; Wade Halsey of Covington, KY., Lester Halsey of Mt. Sterling, KY., Jones Halsey and Clay Halsey both of Brownsburg, IN., Bobby Halsey of Harrodsburg, KY., two sisters; Geneva Bogle of Somerset, and Hazel Akins of Rushville, IN., seven grandchildren; Gregory Scott (and Tina) Surber, Denise  (and Troy) Mayfield, Melanie Campbell, Kevin (and Auburn) Cook, Melody Cook, Eric Surber, LaKeia Nicole Cook, six great grandchildren; Alex, Mikaela, Adriana, Madison, Megan and Devin.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Her husband; James M. Cook whom she married on May 22, 1942 and passed away on August 5, 1991. One brother; Ellis Halsey, two sisters; Beulah Stepp and Rose Perkins.

Funeral services will be Sunday February 3, 2002 at 2:00 P.M. at McKinney Baptist Church with Bro. Shelby Reynolds officiating. Burial will be in the McKinney Cemetery, Science Hill. Visitation will be after 6:00 P.M. Saturday February 2, 2002 at the Chapel of Morris & Hislope Funeral Home. Orvil Lee Dick, 75, Orvil Dick Road passed away Tuesday January 29, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born June 4, 1926 in the King Bee, KY., a son of the late Chester Dick and Bertha (Wesley) Dick. He was a World War II U. S. Army Veteran, a long time employee of Cooper Power Plant, a farmer and of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife; Mary Emogene (Hines) Dick, whom he married January 27, 1950, three sons; Hobert Edmon Dick, Nancy, KY., Chester Lee Dick Somerset, KY. and David Clay Dick, Waynesburg, KY. five daughters; Betty Lou Mistyurik, Troy, OH., Ethel Marie Cooper, Nancy, KY., Ruby Jean Calhoun, Somerset, KY., Reva Faye Dick and Peggy Ilean Dick, both of Science Hill, four brothers; Clifford Dick, Smith grove, KY., Fred Dick, Rensselar, IN., Homer Dick and Lloyd Dick, both of Science Hill, one sister; Enola Grace Phelps, Indiana, 13 grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by one daughter; Anna Mae Dick one infant son; one infant sister; Martha Mae Dick and four brothers; Edmon T. "Ed", Hobert, James and Floyd Dick.

Funeral services will be 1:00 P. M. Friday February 1, 2002 at the Chapel of Morris and Hislope Funeral Home with Brother Johnie Waters officiating. Burial will be in Shady Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6:00 P.M. Thursday January 31, 2002 at the Chapel of Morris and Hislope Funeral Home.
