Herbert Alton Stykes December 12, 1921 - June 26, 2008
Herbert
Alton Stykes, of Somerset, passed away on June 26, 2008. He was born on
Dec. 12, 1921 to Henry and Lula Stone Stykes. He is
survived by his son, Jerome C. “Jerry” Stykes, and his son, Jarrod
(and Sarah) Stykes; his daughter, Beverly (and Doug) Rice and their
sons, Shawn, Bryan (and Sherri), and their children, Elizabeth and
Grayson Rice; his daughter, Gloria (and Jeff) McGrady and her sons,
Joseph and Jake Neikirk, stepsons Garrett McGrady, Chuck (and Anna)
Insko and Eddie (and Mindy) Insko and their children, Chaise and Sarah
Insko; his son, Kevin H. (and Joann Dykes) and their daughters, Ashley
and Brittany Stykes. He is
also survived by his sister, Faye Hall Gleason; and his brother, Lloyd
(and Mary) Stykes; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and
great-nephews. He was
preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; his son, Gregory
Joseph Stykes; his daughter-in-law, Sharon Kaye Wyatt Stykes; his
son-in-law, Edward Insko; his brothers, Robert, Glen, Howard and Edward;
and his sisters, Ethel Debord and Adeline, Stella, and Elcie Stykes. Herb
served his country during World War II in the Army Air Corps as a crew
chief and he worked for Fischer Body in Cincinnati, Ohio. He owned and
operated Queen City Auto Parts and the Lake Cumberland Speedway. He
retired from the Kentucky State Highway Department, he was a
long-standing member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church and he was a
50-year member of the Masonic Lodge. He will
be a great loss to his family and the community. Funeral
services will be at 1:00 pm Sunday, June 29 at Lake Cumberland Funeral
Home with Lt. Colonel Chaplain Jeffrey
McGrady officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, June 28 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. Masonic services will be conducted by the Mt. Gilead Masonic Lodge #255 of Science Hill at 7:00 pm.
