Mrs. Clessie E. Bray passed to her death January 24, 2002, in Hendersonville, N.C. after a short recurring illness.

Clessie was born at Poplarville, Kentucky on February 12, 1912, the first of 8 children to Green S. and Mary Bell Poynter Rogers.

She was united in marriage to Leonard J. Bray in 1929. Life was hard due to the depression and they chose to move to Indiana, where work was available. In 1985 they returned to their roots and spent several years in Somerset. As their health declined, it was necessary to move close to their daughters and sons-in-law.

Preceding her in death were her parents, 4 brothers; Earl, Coy, Eugene, and Donald Rogers.

She is survived by her husband of 72 years; Leonard J. Bray, 2 daughters and sons-in-law; George and Betty Lou Bray Sermersheim and Stanley and Edith Delois Bray Vera Cruz, a brother; Curtis Rogers of Burlington, IN., 2 sisters; Imogene Thrasher and Charlene Sermersheim of Somerset, KY., 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

Clessie was a wonderful Christian lady and was loved by all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. She was a member of the Somerset Seventh Day Adventist Church. Her greatest love was that for her Savior Jesus Christ, for whom she has written many poems and songs.

Asleep in Jesus, She now waits the glorious resurrection, when she will be eternally united with those she loved. 1st Thes. 4:13-18

Funeral services will be 2:00 P. M. Wednesday January 30, 2002 at the Chapel of Pulaski Funeral Home and she awaits her resurrection at the Goodwater Cemetery.

Clyde Stringer, 78, Plantation Ave. Somerset, KY. passed away Saturday January 26, 2002 at Sunrise Nursing Home.

He was born November 10, 1923 in Ringgold, Ky. a son of the late Andrew Perkins "Perk" Stringer. He was a laborer for Modern Vending Co., and employee for Cumberland Lake Shell, owned a Car Lot for many years on East KY. Hwy. 80 and was of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife, Burnetta (Dick) Stringer whom he married on February 17, 1945; three sons, Dannie C. (and Patricia L.) Stringer, John Gary (and Patricia D.) Stringer, both of Somerset, KY. and Tony (and Debbie) Stringer, Lexington, KY.; five grandchildren, Coral (and Josh) Haynes, Lexington, KY., Kevin (and Jill) Stringer, Shopville, KY., Courtney (and Kevin) Hollis, John Cory Stringer, and Tyler Stringer, all of Lexington, KY.; two great grandchildren, Joshua Stringer and Kala Stringer, both of Shopville, KY.; one niece, Faustine (and Wilbur) Norfleet Somerset, KY.; one nephew, Mark (and Doris) Stringer, Somerset, KY.; one sister-in-law, Edith Hein Stringer, Somerset, KY. as well as several great-nieces and great-nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Plano Stringer, Harold (and Madeline) Stringer and Carthel Stringer; one sister Fannie (and Ralph) Eller.

Homer Akers, 85, of Delray Beach, FL. passed away Thursday January 24, 2002 at Kindred Hospital in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

He was born December 30, 1916 in Onedia, KY. a son of the late Joshua Akers and Ivory (Laxton) Akers. He was an Engineer, a Broadcaster and Co-Founder of WTHL & WWOG Christian Radio.

He is survived by three nephews, Glen (and Betty) Akers, Ferndale, MI., Herb Akers, Sterling Heights, MI. and Fred (and Burnis) Griffith, Jasper, MI.; five nieces, Shirley Reasey, Warren, MI, Dorothy Morris, Cape Coral, FL., Janice Cutler, Memphis, TN., Anita (and Donald) Prince, Fraser, MI. and Cheryl (and Michael) Kennedy, Warren, MI.; one sister-in-law, Edna Akers, Warren, MI.

Philip Pumphrey, 61, Old Bandy Road passed away Friday January 25, 2002 at his residence.

He was born December 25, 1940 in Detroit, MI., a son of the late Joseph L. Pumphrey and Nancy Ann (Roberts) Pumphrey. He was a Welder, a U S Army Veteran attaining the rank of SP4, retired for the Wright Patterson Airforce Base and a member of Fairview Church of God in Willailla, KY.

Lou Vena (McClendon) Lester, 87, E. New York St Indianapolis, IN., formerly of Science Hill passed away Thursday January 24, 2002 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

She was born September 22, 1914 in Vinnie, KY. a daughter of the late Oscar McClendon and Emma (Frye) McClendon-Wallace. She was a self employed Apartment Owner.

She is survived by one son, William Carroll "Billy" Lester, Indianapolis, IN.; two daughters, Gina Wilson-Rotstein, Los Angeles, CA. and Ureka Ann Wilson-Todd, Milroy, IN.; two sisters, Ovaleen Eastham, Russell Springs, KY. and Irene Johnson, Nancy, KY.; 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles A. Lester.

Jerry Michael Girdler, 50, of Lake Elsinore, California, died Sunday January 20, 2002 at Lake Elsinore Hospital.

Born August 20, 1951, in Pulaski County, KY. he was a son of Anna Lee McKee Girdler and the late Oliver Bert Girdler. He was an engineer, employed at the St. Jude’s Hospital in Fullerton, California. For many years he was a member of Skydiving groups ad Lake Elsinore and Perris Airports in California. He was a member of Camp Ground Baptist Church of Somerset.

He is survived by his mother, 1 brother; William O. (and Karen) girdler of Pomona Missouri and 3 sisters; Betty Jo (and Bernard) Moss and Janet Lee (and Roy Lee) Taylor both of Somerset, KY., and Joyce Ann (and Allen Ray) Sullivan of Middletown, OH. Survivors also include nephews and nieces; Jeffrey (and Kim) Sullivan and Michael Sullivan of Middletown, OH., Sylvia K. (and Roger) Cox of Lawrenceburg, KY., Lisa D. Moss of Somerset, KY., Annette R. Brinson of Birmingham, Ala., Amanda Lynn, Jessica Lee, and William O. Girdler Jr., Nicholas and Stephanie Rivello of Pomona, MS., step-niece; Angie (and Nate) Warren, Step-nephews; Steve (and Tonya) and Brian (and Tonya) Taylor, and 13 grand-nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mildred Gladys Taylor 1101 Shafter Shepola Road Somerset passed away Saturday January 19, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born February 29, 1928 to the late Delbert and Carrie (Hammond) Taylor. She was a retired assembly line worker, Lear Seigler. She was a charter member of Denham Street Baptist Church. She enjoyed being with her family and embroidering with family members. Her family will cherish her gifts of embroidered baby quilts, pillows cases and large quilts.

She is survived by three sons, Jerry C. and his wife Della Tucker of Somerset, Charles Ray and his wife Charlotte Tucker of Olive Branch, MS., Larry K. and his wife Debbie Tucker of Somerset; one daughter, Jenny Lou and her husband Darrell Morris of Fort Belvior, VA.; three brothers Harold and his wife Brenda Taylor of Amherst, Ohio., Forrest Taylor of Somerset, Leonard and his wife Arlene Taylor of Burnside; five sisters, Jeannie and her husband Billy Taylor of Somerset, Wanda and her husband Lloyd Dykes of Cincinnati, Ohio., Laura Tucker of Bronston, Anna Pearl McKee of Somerset, Della and her husband Noel Dodson of Somerset; one uncle, Luid Hammond of Burnside; one aunt, Opal Hammond of Amherst, Ohio.; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Irene Marcum, daughter of the late Otho and Nannie Copenhaver Noe. was born at Kidder, KY. on June 18, 1924 and departed this life on January 18, 2002 having attained the age of 77 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. James Marcum who preceded her in death. She was born March 24, 1907 in Whitley City, KY., a daughter of the late James Franklin Cooper and Sarah (Dolan) Cooper. She was a Homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter, Arleen (and Doyle Searcy, Frankfurt, Germany: two grandchildren, Michael Barton (and Debbie) Searcy, Miami, FL. and Erin Kathleen (and Andy) Wells, Anchorage, AL.: one sister, Flonnie Wilson, Science Hill, KY. and 6 great grandchildren.

Dorothy Christine (Prows) McKinney, 73, Somerset Village passed away Wednesday January 16, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born February 19, 1928 in Illinois a daughter of the late Willie Prows and Lona (Gibson) Prows. She was a homemaker.

She is survived by two sons, Clifford Wayne (and Rita) McKinney, Somerset and Andy (and Charlotte) McKinney, San Angelo, TX.: two daughters, Betty (and Gary) Mauntel, Bethel, OH. and Patricia Burkhart -Cook, Faubush: four brothers, William Prows, Indianapolis, IN., Roy Prows, Spencer, IN., James Prows, Reading, OH. and Lester Prows, Eubank: two sisters, Alberta Price, Somerset and Pearlie Lovins, Batavia, OH.: 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

She was born September 26, 1908 in Ferndale, KY., a daughter of the late Emmett Gadberry and Delia (Randolf) Gadberry. She was a homemaker and a member of Sardis Christian Church.

Ronald (and Eva) Wesley, Lawrence "Buck" (and Faye) Wesley, Eldon (and Stella) Wesley, Raven (and Fern) Wesley, Boyd (and Faye) Wesley, all of Science Hill, Ivan (and Judy) Wesley and Ira (and Mary) Wesley both of Ohio: two daughters, Illa Jean (and Gerald ) Hendricks and Dovie (and Glenn) Haste both of Science Hill: 26 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents: her husband William Mitchell Wesley, whom she married on September 17, 1925 and who passed away November 6, 1960: two sons Gladstone "Glad" Wesley and Donald Wesley: two daughters, Alice Norris & Infant Delda May Wesley: three brothers: five sisters: one son-in-law, one daughter-in-law and 8 grandchildren.

Doxie Evelyn (Bailey) Baker, 81, Old Salts Road passed away Sunday January 13, 2002 at Somerset Nursing & Rehab Facility.

She was born March 11, 1920 in Pulaski County, a daughter of the late Drew Bailey and Doxie (Dye) Bailey. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Point Baptist Church in Lincoln County and attended the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Somerset, KY.

She is survived by four daughters, Drucilla (and Don) Young, Stanford, KY., Aleta (And Kenneth) Eckstein, Dalton, GA., Karen (and Tommy) Taylor, Dothan AL. and Shari (and Jerry) Swanson, Nancy, KY.: two sisters, Edna (and Leonard) Dalton. Nancy, KY. and Elma Baker: 10 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild as well as several Loved Nieces, nephews and daughter-in-laws’.

She is preceded in death by her parents: her husband, Raymond Henry Baker whom she married on May 25, 1940 and who passed away on October 19, 1986: two sons, J. E. Baker and Wallace Baker: one brother-in-law, William Bradley.

Gertie Randall, daughter of the late Macy and Mary Ellen Adams Phelps, was born at White Lily, KY. on October 29, 1938 and departed this life on Saturday January 12, 2002 having attained the age of 63 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Floyd Randall on December 10, 1960 in Somerset, KY. He survives. Other survivors include 1 son; Jack Randall and his wife Rebecca of Somerset, KY., 1 brother; Edward Phelps of Somerset, KY., and 3 grandchildren; Ruth Ellen Randall, Hannah Randall and Jacklynn Randall all of Somerset and a host of other relatives.

Helen Merdell (Price) Poynter, 83, Hwy. 70 passed away Saturday January 12, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born August 8, 1918 in Somerset, KY. a daughter of the late George A. "Eddie" Price and Nattie (Price) Price. She was a homemaker and a member of Northside Freewill Baptist Church in Dayton, OH. She was the baby of 9 children, lovingly known to everyone as "Aunt Dell" and a resident of Dayton, OH. for 53 years.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, great great nieces and nephews and great great great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents: her husband Joseph Paul Poynter who passed away September 4, 1977: one adopted brother, Louis Waddle: brothers and sisters, Lima Estes, Noel Price, Sella Farmer, Audie Price, Adron Price and Louie Price.

Mrs. Exie Eubank McGahan age 96 of Highway 39, Somerset, passed away at the Madison Manor Nursing Home in Richmond, KY. on January 10, 2002.

She was born of the late dock and Eliza Eubank at Eubank, KY. on May 25, 1905. She and Taylor McGahan were married on April 21, 1921. She was a member of the Nelson Valley Baptist Church, she was a loving mother and housewife.

She is survived by one daughter; Christine Reed and her husband Charles of Highway 39, Somerset, KY., a son-in-law; Ronald Wooten of Richmond, KY., three grandchildren; Sharon Reed of Lexington, KY., Sherri Johnson and her husband Jimmy of Richmond, KY., and Kristy Wooten of Richmond, KY., and many nephews and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her husband; Taylor McGahan on May 16, 1985 and on daughter; Wanda Wooten on September 2, 2001 in Richmond, KY.

James Robert "Bob" Storey, son of the late Claude and Martha Florence West Storey, was born at Glenmary, TN. on February 9, 1912 and departed this life one Wednesday January 9, 2002 having attained the age of 82 years.

He was united in marriage to Nixola Smith Storey on February 10, 1940, she precede him in death. Other than his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by 1 grandson; Chuck Cowan, 5 brothers; Mack, Paul Claude Jr. and George Storey.

Bob was a retired Freight Agent for Southern Railroad, he was a 50 year plus member of Somerset Masonic Lodge #111 F&AM, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star. He was a World War II veteran in the U. S. Army and a member of the Buena Vista Baptist Church. He was a kind person who will be greatly missed by all who knew him, he leaves a host of relatives and friends who mourn his passing.

Maxine (Rainwater) Jasper, 84, North Hwy. 837 passed away Tuesday January 8, 2002 at Brithaven Nursing Home.

She was born August 22, 1917 in Mintonville, KY. a daughter of the late Herbert Rainwater and Della (Gosser) Rainwater. She was a homemaker and a member of Somerset First United Methodist Church.

she is survived by three daughters, Cecelia Butcher, Somerset, KY., Sandra Gould, and Teresa Burton, both of Dayton, OH.: 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: her husband, George Jasper whom she married in September 1937: three brothers, Edward, Beecher and Richard Rainwater: four sisters, Alma, Alpha, Myrtle and Winnie Rainwater.

Burial will be in Lakeside Memorial Gardens.

She was born December 25, 1943, a daughter of Revel Randall and Tessie (Quizenberry) Randall . She was an employee of Corder’s Jewelry and a member of High Street Baptist Church.

She is survived by her parents: her husband, Billy J. Mrs. Maggie Hughett, daughter of the late William Burnett and Adina Cooper Burnett was born in Wayne County on October 20, 1915 and departed this life on Sunday January 6, 2002 having attained the age of 86 years.

She was united in marriage to Charlie Hughett who preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 daughter; Pearl Kuhnapfel and her husband Charlie of Somerset, KY. a grandson; Danny Kunapfel and his wife Tammy of Eubank, KY. 1 step son; Chester Hewitt of Panama City, FL., and 2 step-daughters; Dorothy Beckman of Florida and Betty Renschler of Carrollton, KY. She is survived by a total of 18 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Other that her parents and husband she was preceded in death by 4 brothers; Elmer, Marion, Fred and Robert Burnett, 1 step-son; Homer Hewitt, and 1 great grandson; Anthony Wayne Thompson.

Don C. Long, 77, Sims Ridge Road passed away Sunday January 6, 2002 at St. Elizabeth South Hospital in Edgewood, KY.

He was born February 3, 1924 in Martin, KY., a son of the late Forrest Long and Dorothy (Frazier) Long. He was a Steel Worker, Co-Owner of Long & Snow Grocery in Kings Mt., KY. He attended West Liberty School was a member of the Masonic Lodge #478 in Ludlow, KY. and a member of Indian Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Carolyn Ross, Edgewood, KY.: two brothers, Roger Long, Amelia, OH. and Gene Long, Morrow, OH.: one sister, Verde Thomas, Moscow, OH.

He was preceded in death by his parents: his wife, Sylvia Delano (Moran) Long: one son, C. W. Thomas: one brother, Johnny Long: one 1/2 brother, Lester Long.

Cody Christopher Nix, 8, Coal Pit Road passed away Friday January 4, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born in September 7, 1993 in Greenfield, Indiana, a son of Pastor Scotty Nix and Melissa (Jones) Nix. He was a 3rd grade student at Shopville Elementary and was a member of Clifty Grove Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents: one brother, Jeremy Nix Somerset, KY.: two uncles, Donney (and Teresa) Nix, New Palestine, IN. and Chris (and Shasta) Jones, Somerset, KY.: three aunts, Tangy Tarter, Lisa (and Barry) Erp and Kim (and Patrick) Hunley, all of Somerset, KY.: Grandparents, Jerry and Marlene Jones, Somerset, Ky. and Jim and Lucille Vaught, Somerset, KY.: great-grandparents, Rev. Leon and Faye Lawson, Parris and Zella Norton, Elizabeth Marie Poynter and Faye Jones, all of Somerset: three cousins, Amber and Caleb Nix and Jarod Tarter. As well as many friends and loved ones.

Maxine (Milner) Whitaker, 71, of Burkley Homes Danville, Ky., passed away Saturday January 5, 2002 at the Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, Ky.

She was born October 2, 1930 in Kings Mountain, Kentucky a daughter of  the late Champ and Roxie Mae (Roland) Milner. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Southern Baptist Church of Falmouth, Falmouth Indiana.

Survivors include two step sons, Donald Whitaker of Eubank, Kentucky and Glen Whitaker of Blue Creek, Ohio: one step daughter, Shirley Mckee of Connersville, Indiana: one sister, Imogene Adams of Kings Mountain, Kentucky: three nieces, one nephew, five step grandchildren and four step great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: her husband Fayne Whitaker; a brother Floyd Milner.

Mrs. Carolyn Massey, daughter of the late Jessie and Grace Girkey Wilson, was born at Nancy, KY. On November 11, 1933 and departed this life on Thursday January 3, 2002 in Somerset having attained the age of 68 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. Harold Frank Massey who survives. Other survivors include 2 daughters; Konnie Massey of Somerset, KY. and Reida Helton and her husband Frankie of Burnside, KY., 1 sister; Jessie Mae Wilson of Somerset, KY. 2 sisters-on-law; Berta Fran Jaynes and her husband Bob of Limestone, TN., and Paula Ann Coulston and her husband Bob of Wichita, KS., her father-in-law; Everett Pierce Massey of Somerset, KY., 1 half brother; Jerry Wayne Wilson of Somerset, KY., and 2 grandchildren; David Karis Massey and Jonathon Everett Helton.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Howard, Muriel, and Lawrence Wilson, 1 sister-in-law; Ruth Wilson, and 2 half brothers; Mike and Ronald Wilson.

Carolyn was a homemaker, a seamstress, a babysitter, and a clothing pressor for both Jiffy and Big B Cleaners and she was a member of the West Somerset Baptist Church. She was a kind person who will greatly missed by all who knew her and she leaves a host of relatives, friends and church family who mourn her passing.

Mr. Jonas Glen Elliott, 72, Elliott Lane passed away Thursday January 3, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born August 8, 1929 in Ansel, KY., a son of the late Charlie Elliott and Hettie (Wilson) Elliott, He was US Army Sergeant in the Korean War, a retired employee of Crane Plumbing, a member of Mt. Gilead Masonic Lodge #255 of Science Hill, a member of the Somerset-Pulaski County Rescue Squad. He loved sports and Blue Grass Music, was a member of First Baptist Church of Science Hill and attended the West Somerset Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mable (Maiden) Elliott: one son, Mike (and Rhonda) Elliott, Science Hill: one brother, Carroll (and Nancy Ann) Elliott, Science Hill: one sister, Ruth (and Arl) Dick, Science Hill; one sister-in-law, Hazel Elliott, Science Hill: two grandchildren, Laura Beth Elliott and Leslie Brooke Elliott: one great grandchild, Jalyn Nicole Sweet.

He was preceded in death by his parents: one brother, Paul Elliott: one grandson, Derek Michael Elliott.

Mrs. Elba Meadows, daughter of the late William Alvin and Lucy Mae Bolton Whitis, was born at Dykes, Kentucky on September 26, 1914 and departed this life on January 1, 2002 having attained the age of 87 years.

She was united in marriage to Mr. William Lloyd Meadows who preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 sister; Nellie Meece of Somerset, KY., 5 nieces; Dean Phelps, Joyce Hargis and Juanita Whitis all of Somerset, KY., Mildred Ladlee of Shelbyville, KY., and Peggy Richardson of Texas, 5 nephews; Haskel and Hershel Bolton both of California, William Waddle of Ohio, Buddy Meece of Texas, and Leo Meece of Russell Springs, KY., several great nephews and nieces and a host of friends in Ohio and Somerset.

Other than her parents and husband she was preceded in death by 6 sisters; Ottie Gaines, Effie Bolton, Wilma Meece, Bettie Waddle, Lona Whitis and Ruby Whitis and 1 brother Edward Voris Whitis

Elba was a life long resident of Norwood, Ohio, a homemaker and a member of Providence Baptist Church, she was a Sunday School Teacher and a nursery worker form many years at the Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church in Ohio.

She was a kind lady who will be greatly missed by all who knew her, she leaves a host of friends and relatives who mourn her passing.

Mrs. Josephine (Burnett) Sutton, 64, passed away Sunday December 30, 2001 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.

She was born May 27, 1937 in Keavy, KY., a daughter of the late James Burnett and Luticia (Calia) Burnett. She was a homemaker and a member of McKinney Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday School for 18 years.

Survivors include her husband, Vernice Sutton, whom she married on June 10, 1955:three sons, James R. Sutton, Somerset, KY., Brother Steve (and Debby) Sutton, Somerset, KY. and Michael C. Sutton, Science Hill, KY.: three daughters, Rebecca (and Floyd Young, Science Hill, KY., Connie (and Ralph) Dick, Eubank, KY. and Tamara (and Galen) Burton, Eubank, Ky.: two brothers, Lelend Burnett, Sturgeon Bay, WI. and Herbert Burnett, Somerset, KY.: one sister, Eva Jenkins, New Albany, IN.: 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents: two brothers, Otto and Eugene Burnett: one grandchild, Melissa Sue Sutton.

William Henry Young, 73, Cincinnati, Ohio, passed away Friday December 28, 2001 at his residence.

He was born January 15, 1928, in Williamstown, KY., the son of the late Elmer Young and Bessie (Leigh) Young. He was a Private in the US Army in the Korean War.

He is survived by one son, Randy Young, Crawfordsville, OH.: one daughter, Tammy (and Steve) Vancleave, Pendleton, OH.: one sister Beatrice McClendon, Somerset, KY.: 7 grand children and 1 great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Zelma McClendon, Aileen Young and an infant sister.

Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday January 2, 2002 at Mill Springs National Cemetery with Brother Harold Leigh officiating. Visitation will be after 10:00 A.M. Wednesday January 2, 2002 at the Chapel of Morris and Hislope Funeral Home.
