Mattie Lou Akin

    August 24, 1930 - December 5, 2011

Mattie Lou Akin, age 81 of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life on Monday, December 5, 2011 at her residence. 

She was born on August 24, 1930 in Somerset, Kentucky to the late Robert Crate and Rosa Calhoun Rutherford.  She was a member of Heritage Hope Church of God.  Mrs. Akin had formerly worked as a nurse aide at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.  She received a 15-year Work Service Award through the hospital.  Mrs. Akin witnessed to everyone she met about her Lord and Savior.  She loved going to yard sales and flea markets and she loved to write stories.  She expressed her life through words.  Mrs. Akin loved Gospel music and reading her Bible.

She is survived by two sons, Bobby Vincent (and Kathy) Akin of Somerset, KY and David Walton (and Marlene) Akin of Somerset, KY; five daughters, Judy Kay Todd of Somerset, KY, Vicki Lynn Acey of Somerset, KY, TJ (Tammy) and Dale Mitchell of Somerset, KY, Cathy Rene (and Gilbert) Hernandez of Sadieville, KY and April Cheryl (and Charles) Allen of Belleville, IL; seventeen grandchildren, Scott and Jaime Todd, Jason and Cody Acey, Trina Akin, William Akin, Oonhi Dunn, Anna Vaughn, Shyla Bourne, Brandon Cummins, Abraham Akin, Erin and Storm Cherry, Lance and Lucas Hernandez, Jazmine and Jordon Lewis; sixteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; seven brothers, James R. Rutherford, William C. (and Emily), Dan R. Rutherford, Paul Rutherford, Gale Rutherford, Glenn M. (and Sharon) Rutherford, Tony (and Beth) Rutherford, all of Somerset, KY;  and seven sisters, Ruth Hines of Ohio; Wanda Rains of Covington, KY; Betty Strock of Somerset, KY, Barbra Bland of Somerset, KY, Carol Hines of Ohio, Opal Lee (and Joe) Rainey of Ohio and Relada (and Bob) Merrick of Somerset, KY. 

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Amos Akin, whom she married on November 25, 1948 in Somerset, KY; a brother, Steve Rutherford; two sisters, Ilene Mapes and June Marks and a grandson, Jacob Daniel Akin. 

Visitation will be held Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 6:00 pm at Lake Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset, Kentucky.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, December 9, 2011 at 11:00 am at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Brother Johnny Dunbar officiating.  Burial will be in Somerset Cemetery.
