Mavis Hicks Slone February 21, 1916 - June 15, 2008
Mrs.
Mavis Hicks Slone, age 92, of Somerset passed away on Sunday, June 15,
2008 at her residence. She was
born on February 21, 1916 in Knott County, KY to the late Albert and
Nancy Jane Wicker Hicks. She was a cook for many years at Gahanna
Nursing Home in Gahanna, OH. She was a member of Sonshine Mission Church
in Columbus, OH until she moved to Somerset in 1976, where she attended
the 1St Wesleyan Church of Somerset. She loved quilting,
fishing, cooking, gardening, and her church. Mavis was known as
“Granny” to almost everyone who knew her and loved by so many. Mrs.
Slone is survived by two sons, Arnold B. Slone of Burnside, KY and Troy
Lee (and Carol Jane) Slone of Lancaster, OH; a daughter, Orleanais (and
Lawrence) Fairchild of Tateville, KY; grandchildren, Joanne Slone and
Debbie (and Jim) Wolsey, of Somerset, Timothy (and Fran) Slone of Dry
Ridge, KY, Terri (and Paul) Keith and Doris Slone, of Somerset, Carlos
(and Jeanette) Fairchild, Harlan Fairchild, Mavis (and Ray) Alley, and
David (and Susan) Alley, all of Tateville, KY; Johnny Slone of Columbus,
OH, Janet (and Ken) Boone of Northville, MI, Diane (and Sam) Brackbill
of Columbus, OH, Troyleana (and Eric) Smith and Carolyn Slone of
Cincinnati, OH, and David Slone of Burnside, KY; 54 great grandchildren;
37 great-great grandchildren; one great-great-great grandchild;
and many nieces and nephews. Preceding
her in death were her parents; her husband of 64 years, Samuel Orville
Slone, whom she married on July 15, 1932 in Knott Co., KY; a
daughter-in-law, Mary Lou Slone; four grandchildren, Levonne Fairchild,
Crystal Fairchild, Connie McDoughal, and James Slone; seven sisters,
Elafair Chaffins, Dolly Hellman, Nell Chaffins, Mary Banks, Margaret
Potters, Bealie Hicks, and Mintie Farley; and three brothers, Irvin,
Evan, and Boot Hicks. Visitation
for Mrs. Slone will be Tuesday, June 17th after 6:00 pm at
Lake Cumberland Funeral Home. Funeral service will be Wednesday, June 18th at 1:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Rev. Roy Murray and Pastor Franklin Durham officiating. Burial will follow in the Grave Hill Cemetery, Tateville, KY.
