Norma Bullock Lester, age
86 of Somerset, KY, departed this life on Tuesday, November 23,
2010 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
She was born on September
13, 1924 in Plato, KY to the late George O. and Monna Harris
Bullock. Mrs. Lester was married to Edwin S. Lester whom she
married on September 1946 and preceded her in death on March 7,
Mrs. Lester was a 1941
graduate of Shopville High School and attended Eastern Kentucky
University. During WWII she taught school at Public, KY on an
Emergency Certificate and worked at the Allison Plant 3 in
Indianapolis, IN as a tester for airplane engines for the P38
Fighter Bombers for eight months. She also worked for the local
A& P Tea Company and Ledford’s Market as cashier and
For 46 years, from May 1946
until retirement in February 1992, she worked for the Commonwealth
Journal Newspaper as receptionist, society editor, head
bookkeeper, and purchasing agent. Mrs. Lester was employed with
the newspaper when it became a daily newspaper in January 1, 1966
and when they began to publish a Sunday paper in November 1982.
Even after retirement, she worked in the offices of Dr. R.C.
Holtzclaw from 1994-1997.
Mrs. Lester became a
Christian at the age of 12 years old and remained firm in her
Christian beliefs as long as she lived. She was a charter member
of the Barnesburg Baptist Church, having been one of the first
members instrumental in forming the Church. She served as Sunday
School secretary, Church Clerk, as well on various committees. She
was instrumental in starting Somerset Al-Anon, a spiritual program
of hope and help for families and friends of alcoholics.
Mrs. Lester is survived by
her brother, Melton (and wife, Lois) Bullock of Nokomis, FL;
several cousins; and a large family of friends.
Along with her parents and
husband, she was preceded in death by an uncle, Arvel Harris; and
a special nephew, Kenneth Norman Bullock.
Visitation for Mrs. Lester
will be Friday, November 26th after 6:00 pm at Lake
Cumberland Funeral Home, 1046 West Highway 80, Somerset, KY.
Funeral service will be
held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 27th at the
Chapel of Lake Cumberland Funeral Home with Bro. Harold Harris,
Bro. Austin Campbell, and Bro. Jim Harris officiating. Burial will
be in the Science Hill Cemetery in Science Hill, KY.
