Emma (Hudson) Stephens, 82, Maple Lane passed away Monday October 28, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born August 31, 1920 in Clinton, Ill. a daughter of the late Garfield Hudson and Ella (Burton) Hudson. She was a Basting Puller for 35 years at Palm Beach and a member of Grace Baptist Church.

She is survived by one daughter, Doris Godby, Science hill, KY.; one sister, Edna Dodson, Somerset, KY.; four grandchildren, Nicky Stephens, Rodney Stephens, Shane Stephens and Richard Nicholas; five great grandchildren, Chad, Lucas, Eric & Erin Stephens and Chelsea Nicholas.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold Stephens and one brother Jr. Hudson.

Hayden Christopher Heath, newborn son of Christopher and Brittany Heath of Hail Knob Road passed away Friday October 25, 2002 at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, KY.

Benito “Ben” H. Delgado, 54, Hillview Ave. passed away Saturday October 26, 2002 at his residence.

He was born June 13, 1948 in San Bernardino, California, a son of the late Able Delgado and Sophia Delgado. He was a US Army Vietnam War Veteran, a warehouseman for Modern Distributors & Vending in Somerset, KY. and a member of St. Mildred’s Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Allen whom he married in June 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada; one daughter, Sophia Michelle (and Christopher) Dowd, Marietta, GA.; one brother, Abel Delgado, San Luis Obispo, CA.; four sisters, Patty Yniquez and Becky Bottelo, both of Fontana, CA., Mary Wheeler, San Bernardino, CA. and Monica Mustaller, Napa, CA.

Ralph C. Collins, 67, Jamestown, KY., passed away Wednesday October 23, 2002 at Somerset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

He was born March 23, 1935 in Bath County Kentucky a son of the late James Robert Collins and Mallie (Amburgey) Collins. He was a drywall worker.

He is survived by five sisters, Jeanette Evans and Christine Ward, both of Marshall, AR., Marline Moore, Austin, AR. Edna Wilson, Vilonia, AR. and Sharon McIntire, Harrison, AR.; three brothers, Willard Collins, Noblesville, IN., Eleck Collins, Fortville, IN. and Bueford Collins, Indianapolis, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ulysses Collins.

Arl Dick, 86, Stanford Street, passed away Wednesday October 23, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born August 23, 1916 in Pulaski County, a son of the late Dayton T. Dick and Alma (Godby) Dick. He was a merchant/farmer, Owner of Science hill Market, a member of the Grocers Association, Civilian Conservation Corps during 1935- 1938, Valparasio, IN. and a member of First Baptist Church of Science Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Elliott) Dick; one son, Louie (and Jerry Rae) Dick, Science Hill, KY.; two brothers, Everett (and Pauline) Dick, Science Hill, KY. and John H. Dick, Oak Harbor, OH.; one grandchild, Charles Ray (and Elizabeth).  

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ottis, Howard and Carl Dick; one sister, Edith Wesley.

Mrs. Opal Gayhart, 77, of Burnside, KY, passed away October 23, 2002 at her residence.

She was born in Bulan, KY, September 9, 1925, daughter of the late Moss Miller and Ida (Noble) Miller. She graduated as a Licensed Practical Nurse and worked in Hazard, KY. as an LPN. She was a member of the First Apostolic Church in Somerset.

Survivors include her husband, Lee "Buster" Gayhart, whom she married October 3, 1943 in Hazard, KY.; one daughter, Connie (and Noah) Fugate of Burnside, KY.; a brother, Harold Miller of Bulan, KY.; one sister, Pearlie Wiesenhahan of Lexington, KY.; three grandchildren, Kenyon, Nathan, Westley Fugate and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Willard and Pearl Miller and one sister, Oma Spencer.

Mrs. Cloye Hughes, 81, of Somerset, KY, passed away Oct 23, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

She was born in the King Bee community, March 20, 1921, daughter of the late Cornelius Spaw and Priscilla (Robinson) Spaw. she was a housekeeper at Somerset City Hospital in Somerset, KY and a member of Langdon Street Baptist Church in Somerset.

Survivors include a son, Wendell (and Verla) Hughes of Campbellsville, KY, two sisters, Phyllis (and Jerry) Wheeldon, Darlene (and Daniel) Newberry both of Somerset, KY, five grandchildren, Tommy and Danny Hughes, Ron Wheeldon, Donna Newberry, Diana West and nine great-grandchildren.

G. Thomas Whitmer, 69, of Somerset, KY passed away Monday October 21, 2002 at his residence.

He was born in Vandalia, OH, May 23, 1933, son of the late Windsor Whitmer and Elma (Jackson) Whitmer. He was a Banking Vice President, Fifth Third Bank, former member of Troy City Council, a veteran of the U.S. Army and attended Troy United Methodist Church until his retirement.

Mrs. Imogene Thompson, 66, of  Bronston KY, formerly of Amherst Ohio, passed away Saturday October 19, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset.

She was born in Somerset, KY, July 14, 1936, daughter of the late Tommy Jones and Tella (Tarter) Jones. She was a homemaker and member of the Denham Street Baptist Church of Somerset.

Survivors include her husband Edward Thompson, whom she married in November 29, 1954, two sons, Ronnie L. Columbus C. Dick, 80, Hwy 1676 passed away Monday October 14, 2002 at lake Cumberland Regional hospital.

He was born November 7, 1921, the son of the late Joshua Dick and Melinda Isabelle (Blevins) Dick. He was WWII US Army Veteran achieving the rank of Tech 5, Chief if radar Section, Federal Aviation Agency at Bluegrass Field in Lexington, KY., Taught school in Pulaski County prior to his Federal Service, a 50 year member of Mt. Gilead Lodge #252, Oleika Shrine Member and baptized into the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma (Cantrell) Dick whom he married on February 13, 1957.

His parents precede him in death.

Cecil C. Johnson, 83, Fisher Drive, passed away Tuesday October 15, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

He was born June 24, 1919 in the Sylvia community, a son of the late Henry Johnson and Vida (Pyles0 Johnson. He was a WWII US Army veteran a farmer, worked in Housekeeping at the old Somerset City Hospital and a lifetime member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mary (Blevins) Johnson whom he married on July 7, 1950 in Somerset, KY.; one son, Kenneth (and Teresa) Johnson, Somerset, KY.; one daughter, June (and Jim) Roberts, Eubank, KY.; one sisters, Hazel Girdler, Somerset, KY.; 6 grandchildren, Brian, Joey, Jamie, Chris, and Clay Johnson, and Scott Roberts; 7 great grandchildren.

She was a 1998 graduate of Norwood Christian Academy, attended Masters Commission in Atlanta, GA. and Cleveland, TN. a Day Care Worker at Sonshine Day Care-1st Baptist and worked at Roses Department Store. She was a member of Saline Church of God where she taught Sunday School and was involved with the music ministry.

James L. Miller, 33, Byrdstown, TN., formerly on Somerset, passed away Sunday October 6, 2002 in Jamestown, KY as t result of an automobile accident.

He was born November 8, 1968 in Corbin, KY. the son of Bobby Lee Miller, Somerset, KY. and Carol Ann (Glass) Miller, Kissimmee, FL. He was a cab driver for Clinton Transport in Albany, KY and a member of Freedom Worship Center.

He is survived by his parents; his step mother, Margaret Miller, Somerset, KY.; one son Dakota Bowman Miller, Albany, KY.; one sister, Dorothy Renee Phipps, Lake Helen, FL.

One sister, Lisa Ann Miller Beard, preceded him in death.

Dorothy Mae Price, 63, Old Mt. Vernon Road passed away Tuesday October 8, 2002 at her residence.

She was born July 23, 1939 in Somerset, KY. a daughter of the late Everett Vanhook and Milda (Burdine) Vanhook. She was a factory worker at Lear Seigler Plant, a foster parent and a member of Elrod 1st Church of God.

She is survived by one son, Eddie (and Katrina) Price, Somerset, KY.; two daughters, Cindy (and Eddie) Hall and Sheila Kay (and Denton) Mink, both of Somerset, KY.; three brothers, Joe Vanhook, Cross City, FL., Bill Vanhook, Somerset, KY. and Leamon Vanhook, Stanford, KY.; one sister, Wanda Holt, Somerset, KY. and 5 grandchildren, Christi Wesley Brian Mink, Kraig Price, Tyler Price and Mallory Price.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John E. “Billy Joe” Price whom she married on April 26, 1958 in Pulaski County and who passed away March 22, 2002 and one brother Roy Vanhook.

Opal Mc Atee, 85, Bronston Community passed away Sunday October 6, 2002 at Somerset Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in the Dry Valley Community of Wayne County KY. a daughter of the late Walter E. Gibson and Daisy Cumming Gibson. She was a homemaker and of the Southern Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her husband, John Mc Atee; two daughters, Catherine (and Robert) Ogan, Wabash, TN. and Mary Mc Atee, New York; two sisters, Ruby Silver, Somerset, KY. and Iva Simpson, Cincinnati, OH.; two grandchildren, Lori Vincent and Mandy Wehrley; four great grandchildren and a special friend, Elsie Stiller, New York.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, John Patrick and Joseph Michael Mc Atee; one daughter, Marie Mc Atee; one brother, Cecil Gibson; one sister, Wilma Bryant and one grandson, Michael Ogan.

Jeff Flynn, 31, Florence, KY. formerly of Somerset passed away Saturday October 5, 2002 at St. Luke East Hospital in Fort Thomas, KY. as the result of a motorcycle accident.

He was born May 10, 1971 in Somerset, KY. a son of Gary Flynn and the late Barbara (Pierce) Flynn. He was vice president of Operation, N KY Environmental Management Group and of the Baptist Faith.

He is survived by his father; his stepmother, Penny Ashley; two brothers, Kevin Flynn, Somerset, KY. and Jeremiah (and Denise) Flynn, Washington State; his grandfather, Jessie Flynn; several loving aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara; paternal grandmother, Audra Buis and maternal grandparents, Clifford and Uma Pierce.

Edgar W. Mayfield, 72, Maple Street passed away Saturday October 5, 2002 at V A Medical Center, Lexington, KY.

He was born February 14, 1930 in Elihu Community, a son of the late Will Mayfield and Emma (Fulcher) Mayfield. He was a Korean War US Army veteran, a self-employed mechanic and a member of Pitman Creek Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie (Fair) Mayfield whom he married on August 17, 1957 in Somerset, KY.; one son, George “Dan” Daniel Mayfield; two daughters, Gay (and Jim R.) Hadley, Somerset, KY and Janna Slone, Richmond, KY.; four sisters, Peggy (and Winifry) Wood, Nancy, KY., Shirley (and Bill) Maybrier, Stanford, KY., Carley Morrow, Somerset, KY. and Ivadean (and Bill) Phelps, OH.; two grandsons, Bryan Pierce and Aaron Slone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Fred and Eugene Mayfield; two sisters, Irene Mason and Ora Barnett.

Marie (Estes) Gibson, 82, N Hwy 27 passed away Tuesday October 1, 2002 at Sunrise Manor Nursing Home.

She was born January 13, 1920 in Pulaski County KY. a daughter of the late George P. Estes and Roxie (Crawford) Estes. She was retired Clerk of the ASCS office , a member of the Ladies Counsel of the Science Hill Christian Church, the Science Hill Garden Club and a member of Science Hill Christian Church.

She is survived y one daughter, Jane Crum, Greenville, NC.; one son, (Ralph S. (and Brenda) Gibson, Science Hill; one brother Delbert Estes, St. Cloud, FL.; one sister Flostena Heaton, Somerset. KY.; 3 grandchildren, Michael Crum, Jennifer (Stewart) Livesay and Monica Gibson and 1 great grandchild, Morgan Jane Livesay.

Her parents and 2 sisters, Christine Young and Josephine Richardson, preceded her in death.

George Phillip Harness, 85, Warren Road passed away Monday September 30, 2002 at his residence.

He was born May 26, 1917 in Poynter Creek Community, a son of the late Arville Harness and Loetta (Carte) Harness. He was a retired custodian for Somerset High School and a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Lila Lilian (Dick) Harness, whom he married on September 17, 1935 in the Poynter Creek Community of Pike County; two sons, Ivan (and Fern) Harness and Eldon (and Ann) Harness both of the Carter Ridge Community; one sister, Edith Vaught of Indiana; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren.

His parents; one brother, Chester Harness and one grandchild preceded him in death.

Bernice Wood, 61, E. Mt. Vernon Street passed away Sunday September 29, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born July 20, 1941 in Burnside, KY. a daughter of the late Joe Nick Stigall and Charity (Cox) Stigall. She was a retired seamstress for the Palm Beach Clothing Factory and a member of Grave Hill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Elijah Wood, whom she married one November 25, 1992 in Somerset, KY.; one son, Thurman Stout, Burnside, KY.; two step sons, Eddie (and Montie) Wood, Nancy, KY. and Stephen (and Lisa) Wood, Cedar Grove Community; two daughters, Melinda (and Sam) Martin, Burnside, KY. and Loretta Burton, Somerset, KY.; one step daughter, Beverly (and Jessie) Burchett, Albany, KY.; two sisters, Vuanita Stigall and Louise Boggs, both of Burnside, KY.; 5 grand children, Greg, Brian and Jamie Martin, Jordan Gossett and Samantha Wesley; 2 great grandchildren, Kaleb Martin and Jayden Wesley; 4 step granddaughters and one step grandson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Hulan Stigall; 3 sisters, Mag Bolin Ward and Harriet Hill.

Fern Marie Cromer, 66, South Central Ave passed away Monday September 30, 2002 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.

She was born February 6, 1936 in Somerset, Ky. a daughter of the late Dennis Gossett and Thelma (Brown) Barnett. She was a homemaker and a member of Pitman Creek Baptist Church.

She is survived by one son, Gary Edward (and Barbara) Cromer, Somerset, Ky.; three daughters, Connie Sue (and Joseph) Warren, Yosemite, KY., Lana Jean (and Artman) New, Somerset, KY. and Ritha Ann (and Gale) Morrow, Somerset, KY.; 2 brothers, Robert Gossett, Somerset, KY. and Richard Gossett, Somerset, KY.; 10 grandchildren, Charles Cromer, Tracy Keeney, Michael Childers, Rachel, Ernie and Samantha Warren, Travis, Tracy, Cassie and Callie Morrow; 3 great grandchildren, Jacob Poynter, Mark and Haylee Keeney.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward Cromer whom she married on November 22, 1952 in Somerset, KY.; one sister, Ruby Price and one granddaughter, Jenny Lynn Cromer.

Richard Nolan, 73, Speedway Drive passed away Sunday September 29, 2002 at his residence.

He was born November 9, 1928 in Mt. Victory, KY. a son of the late John Grant Nolan and Nancy (Richmond) Nolan. He was a graduate of Nancy High School and Lindsey Wilson College, a US Army Cpl in the Korean War, a School Teacher, having taught at Clifty, Anderson and Shady Grove Communities and a retired electrician for Crane Plumbing Plant. He was also of the Presbyterian faith.

He is survived by his wife, Ida “Irene” (Weddle) Nolan whom he married on August 9, 1951 in Pulaski County, KY.; one son, Danny (and Cynthia) Nolan, Strunk, KY.; three brothers, Henry H. Nolan, Mt. Victory, John G. Nolan II, Somerset, KY. and Major Leon Nolan, Mt. Victory, KY.; three sisters, Christine Poynter, Somerset, KY., Angelean Whitaker, Somerset, KY. and Margaret Whitaker, Rising Sun, IN.; 3 grandchildren, Dawn Michelle (and Rick Joe) Carson, William Richard Nolan and Robert Douglas Nolan; 2 great grandchildren, Ricky Douglas and Klersten Marcella Carson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Doris Faye Nolan; one brother, Harold Nolan; 2 sisters, Mary Kathleen Roark and Bernice Harris.

Larry “Dale” Back, 67, Correll Street passed away Saturday September 28, 2002 in Somerset, Ky.

He was born June 24, 1932 in Whitesburg, KY. a son of the late Samuel Otis Black and Mattie (Griffin) Back Flynn. He US Navy Veteran, a retired truck driver and laborer, a member of the Masonic Lodge, Disabled American Veterans, New Orleans American Legion Post and VFW #7323.

He is survived by his mother; four daughters, Elaina (and Dale) Whitaker, Somerset, KY., Sheila (and Randell) Hubbard, Bronston, KY., Maria (and Daniel) Ziegler, Galena, OH. and Rhonda (and Darmus) Dalton Jr., Somerset, KY.; two brothers, Fredrick Landus Back, Powell, TN and Jerry N. Back, Arcadia, IN.; nine grandchildren, Valerie Whitaker, Brandi-Jill Whitaker, Jordan Whitaker, Ambria Woodall, Sheranda Hubbard, Hagan Hubbard, Ali Zeigler, Brooke Compton and Tiara Compton.
