James LeRoy Beal of Somerset, Kentucky, passed away on March 7, 2026 at Lake Cumberland Hospital. He was born in Hillsboro, Illinois on March 17, 1952 to Irvin and Bessie (Rufus) Beal. James was a one of a kind man who valued hard work, humility, and faith throughout his life.
He married the love of his life, Venita Souza Beal on November 21, 1981 and she survives. He is also survived by four children: Scott (Danielle) Buhlig of Yukon, OK, Darin (Jennifer) Buhlig of Winchester, IL, Brandi Splain of Somerset, and Shawn Beal of Jacksonville, IL. James was blessed with 13 grandchildren and 14 great‑grandchildren, each of whom brought him tremendous joy. He is also survived by a Brother, Richard Applegate, Sr and a Sister, Linda Hamby. He was proceeded in death, by his Parents, a son, Christopher Beal and a Brother, Terry Applegate.
Most recently, James worked for the City of Somerset for five years where he made many wonderful friends that became his extended family. Prior to that, he worked at Anderson Clayton in Jacksonville, Illinois for 30+ years. He was known for his gentle spirit, his willingness to lend a hand, and the steady kindness he offered to everyone he met. He was strong in his faith and served others all his life.
A memorial service honoring James’s life will be held at New Life Church in Ferguson, Kentucky, at 2 p.m. on March 22nd; where he served as Deacon and “official door opener/greeter” for many years. In lieu of flowers, Family requests Memorials be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland, in James’ memory.
