Carla Sue Smith (Ballinger)

Carla Sue Smith (Ballinger) age 75 of Somerset, Kentucky, went home to be with her heavenly father on Thursday, August 24, 2023 with her husband and children at her side.

She was a loving, devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was a friend to all. Her main goal in life was to make everyone else happy. Carla was married to her husband Charles (Eddie) for over 56 years. Carla was born in Hamilton, Ohio and graduated from Taft High School in 1966. She went on to continue her education to become a Respiratory Therapist, working at Mercy Hospital in Hamilton. Carla and her family moved to Somerset, Kentucky where she continued her education to go on to be a Registered Cardiac Sonographer. She worked at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, then transitioned to Dr. Thannoli’s practice as his Sonographer, from there she retired. Carla loved the outdoors, camping and boating with her family as well as making crafts with her grandchildren. She homeschooled her very special granddaughter. Carla was an amazing mother and Nana who took great pride in planning family holidays.

Carla was preceded in death by her parents, Curt and Doris Ballinger (Bowling); grandson, Shelby Smith, as well as a sister Stephanie Ballinger.

She is survived by her husband, Charles Edward; three sons, Eddward Brian of Harrison, Ohio, Christopher Todd of Somerset, Nicholas Shane and daughter-in-law Trist of Somerset; six grandchildren, Luke and Lindsey of Cincinnati, Ohio; T.J. Colton, Alex and  Emily, her special needs granddaughter whom she adored, three great-grandchildren, Olivia, Jackson and Silas; a sister Connie Wilson (brother-in-law Jerry); niece Ashlee, nephew Tyler and his wife Jenna and their children, Grace and Julia Willis.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023 at Southern Oaks Funeral Home, 2110 W Hwy 914, Somerset, Kentucky, with visitation beginning at 3:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Kosairs Childrens Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky or your favorite charity.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Thannoli, April Thannoli and Dr. Mullai for their love, support and care for Carla and her family. Also, thank you to the staff at Hospice of Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital for their excellent care.
