Leonard Avera Sr.

Leonard Avera Sr., age 78, of Somerset, Kentucky, passed from this life on Monday, September 11, 2023 at Hospice of Lake Cumberland with his daughter, Djuana by his side.

Leonard was born on October 23, 1944 to the late Harold G. “Bud” Avera and Jewel Hatter Avera in Somerset, Kentucky.

He was a member of Langdon Street Baptist Church, former member of First Church of the Nazarene and Charter Member of Lake Cumberland Nazarene Church. He graduated from Somerset High School. He worked for Southern Belle for 27 years, for Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital as a transporter for 20 years from which he retired, and was the owner of Avera Shell. Leonard enjoyed softball, golf, traveling, listening to music, reading his Bible, Prayer every morning and loved his family.

Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Avera (12 days prior to his passing), his parents, Harold “Bud” and Jewel Avera, son, Leonard Avera Jr., brothers, Harold “Junie” Avera Jr. (Kathleen), Harlan “Hootie” Avera, sister, Margie Avera Wilson (Virgil) and his furbaby, Rusty “Little Man”.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, his daughter, Djuana Lynn Avera Harris (John) of Somerset, Ky; daughter in law, Daryl Jean Avera of Somerset, Ky; sister in law, Revetta Avera Hardwick of Somerset, Ky; granddaughter, Heather Lynette Harris Blevins (Matthew) of New Albany, IN; grandsons, Christopher Ray Harris of Somerset, Ky; Kevan Mooney (Olivia) of Albany, NY; great-granddaughter, Delilah Noel Rose Blevins of New Albany, IN; life time friend, Gene Whitaker; along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 6-8pm in the Chapel of the Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 1pm at the funeral home with Bro. Jerry Chandler and Bro. Logan Hargis officiating. Burial will follow in Somerset Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Leonard Avera Sr.
